Frankfurt International School
Master Plan and DaVinci Building
Frankfurt, Germany
H2L2 was commissioned by Frankfurt International School to complete a full evaluation of facilities at the main campus. Recent enrollment increases and curriculum expansion had put a demand on educational space, necessitating a study of how best to solve these needs while preserving the integrity of the elementary and upper school areas. Additionally, the school looked for solutions to auto and bus traffic flow concerns, service difficulties, the lack of an adequate performance venue, and inadequate sports fields.
Any potential solution to these concerns needed to be respectful and balanced with the wonderful natural beauty of the campus and respect for the delicate natural features, such as the nearby stream and ponds, historic millrace, and adjacent national forest.
Through a very interactive planning process that included a tremendous amount of input and cooperation with school representatives at all levels, key planning objectives were identified.
Working with the school, a bold yet practical answer to the school’s concerns arose out of the myriad of options studied. Modest additions to the school would solve basic space needs. However, careful sitting of these facilities would bring about great transformation and improvement to the overall image of the school.
The creation of a new entrance drive would, in a single move, improve auto and bus circulation and safety, and dramatically heighten the sense of arrival to this fine institution.
Overall, the H2L2 Master Plan met the school’s ambitious objectives to improve the functionality of the campus, to boldly transform its image, and to achieve the objectives through manageable phasing of improvements.
