Quinnipiac Bridge
New Haven, Connecticut
Formerly named the Pearl Harbor Memorial Bridge, the "Q-Bridge" as it is known locally, carrier I-95 over the Quinnipiac River. The mile-long structure will be replaced to accommodate the current level of use and meet Federal safety standards. The new structure will carry 10 lanes, four more that the current bridge, have wider shoulders and median for an average width of 225 feet. The project's scope also encompasses two interchange connections to the bridge.
Connecticut's DOT has requested that the lead engineers, URS, consider aesthetics as a key issue during this Preliminary Design Phase. H2L2, as architectural consultant, assisted with design development and evaluation of four alternative designs for steel and concrete superstructures and concrete substructures. For the preferred design alternative, H2L2 developed schematic level sketches to include lighting, railing and fascia treatments and pier studies. H2L2's scope also included the Stiles Street Bridge, the Fulton Terrace Bridge, flyover and retaining walls, and noise barriers. H2L2 prepared presentation renderings and participated in agency review/community involvement meetings that are required for this major public investment.
